Batsmen pile on the runs in Round 3
After a wet start to the season the batsmen around the McDonald's Sydney Shires Competition looked forward to some sunny weather and they made the most of it in Round 3 with 13 players reaching triple figures across the 4 grades (7 of those in First Grade)
It was a run fest in the First-Grade match between Warringah and North West Sydney at Weldon Oval. Batting first Warringah made first use of a good pitch racing to 6/346 (dec) off just 58 overs with Khalid Sawas continuing his good form scoring 155 to follow up his 77* in the previous round. Sawas was well supported by his captain Tristan Rajah who fell 5 runs short of bringing up his own century when he was dismissed for 95 ending a 207-run partnership. NWS skipper Alex Daniels led the way for his team brilliantly in their pursuit of Warringah’s mammoth total scoring a massive 164 opening the batting. However, despite giving the Men in Green a scare NWS fell 46 runs short of their target, being dismissed for an even 300 off 72.4 overs.
Another thriller was played out in First Grade at Roseville Chase Oval between Roseville and Lane Cove. After being sent in to bat Roseville went about setting a big total and they did just that making 9/305 (dec) with Ronald Alexander the star scoring 123. The ‘Roses’ looked to have victory in the bag when they had Lane Cove 8/195 at one stage before skipper Damian Naughton and number 10 Joe Scarcella got together. The two preceded to compile a match winning partnership of 111 with Naughton reaching his century finishing 110not out with Scarcella remaining unbeaten on 65 as Lane Cove reached their target 8 wickets down.
In other First Grade news a 242-run partnership between Lindfield’s Thomas Cullen (166) and Dean Royds (101) was the highlight in Lindfield’s draw with Epping. After setting Epping a total of 358 for victory, Lindfield couldn’t take the desired wickets for victory with Epping closing the match out at 7/234.
Special mention to Auburn’s Thanuja Mudiyansela who took the amazing figures of 8/19 of 14.3 overs in his clubs Third Grade match against Mount Pritchard-Southern Districts. In a week dominated by the bat, Thanuja single handedly destroyed the Mounties batting line up as his side took a first innings victory.
