Round One of the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition saw all grades begin the 2019/20 season with Limited Overs matches. With the Shires First Grade Limited Over matches introducing White Balls and Full Coloured clothing the First Round was able to host a day night fixture between North West Sydney and Pennant Hills at Kanebridge Oval. Pennant Hills won the toss and decided to bat in the daylight hours with Captain Cosikan Beadle leading the way with 92. Beadle’s innings included 13 boundaries and helped the Pumas post 217. In reply North West Sydney chased down the total comfortably under lights with openers Ahsan Ul-Haq (101*) and John Starkey (89*) combining for an unbeaten 218 run opening partnership to help the Hurricanes to a 10-wicket victory.
Defending First Grade Premier Mount Prichard-Southern Districts went down by just 6 runs in their season opener against Strathfield at Airey Park. Strathfield’s captain Paul Donovan lead the way for his team with an unbeaten 110 runs off 150 balls. Opening the batting Donovan hit 8 fours and 1 six to help his team post 7/211 of their 50 overs. Mounties starting their run chase well with new captain and opening batsmen John DiBartolo reaching 65 however a 5-wicket haul from Strathfield’s Gavin Dennett (5/49) helped his side dismiss the Premier’s for 205 resulting in a 6-run victory.
Macquarie Universities Himanshu Warde led the way with the ball in their First-Grade victory over Epping at Northern Oval. Opening the bowling Warde took 6/40 off his 10 overs as Epping were dismissed for 145 batting first. Epping made Mac Uni work hard in chasing the runs but Nouman Ali’s 67 opening the batting helped get his side over the line as they chased down their target 8 wickets down.
In Lower Grade news, Burwoods Mick Towell’s took an amazing hat-trick off the first three balls of their Third-Grade match to start the season in spectacular fashion. Towells finished with 3/16 as Burwood dismissed Roseville for just 85 in their bonus point victory while Lindfield’s Samuel Tapner scored 125 in his Third Grade teams’ victory over Georges River at Lance Hutchinson Oval.
