Shires Round 2 Review
Round Two of the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition saw the first of the two-day fixtures for the season. Opening round winners Auburn and Strathfield met at George Parry Oval in the First Grade competition with Auburn recording a comfortable first innings victory. With no play available on Day One due to wet weather Auburn won the toss on Day Two and elected to bat first. The Eagles were able to post a healthy total of 3/261(dec) off 49 overs thanks to centuries from Kerrod and Jarryd Gordon. The brothers combined for a 177 run partnership with Kerrod scoring 121 and Jarryd making 101 opening the batting. Strathfield unfortunately never looked likely of chasing the total down being dismissed for 114 with Nasir Jalil finishing with 4/31. Strathfield captain Paul Donovan kept his good form making 50 in the run chase, backing up his century in Round One.
Lane Cove’s Joe Scarcella ripped through the Macquaire University batting line up in their First Grade match at Tantallon Oval. Scarcella, who was the competitions leading wicket taker in 2018/19, recorded the outstanding figures of 8/40 off 15.3 overs as Lane Cove rolled Mac Uni for only 100. Lane Cove brought home the win, finishing the day at 7/127 in reply with captain Damian Naughton making 53.
George’s River posted their first win of the season in First Grade in their match against Roseville at Roseville Chase Oval. Matt Stanton, on First Grade debut, led the way with the ball for the River taking 6/31 as Roseville was dismissed for 157 thanks to Matt Gubbay’s 79. Georges River made light work of the run chase passing the total only 3 wickets down with Curtis Cheney making 51.
In Lower Grade news, there were Second Grade centuries to Burwoods Tom Parton (120) and Georges Rivers Ben Saunders (113) while Warringah’s Fourth Grade team saw twin centuries by Harrison Kantor-Smith (112) and Ky Broome (107*) in their victory over Balmain South Sydney. With the ball Burwood’s Mick Towells maintained his great early season form with figures of 7/28 in Second Grade after taking a hat trick in Round One.
