Shires Round 4 Review

Round Four of the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition saw Auburn maintain their lead in the First Grade Premiership with a first innings victory over Lindfield at Lindfield Oval. After winning the toss, Auburn elected to make first use of the Lindfield Oval deck. After losing some early wickets the Eagles were held together by a century from Corey Lowe. Lowe’s innings of 103 included 15 boundaries and was well supported by Muhammad Ali who made 60. Auburn were able to declare their innings closed at 8/267 after 71 overs. Lindfield’s innings begun poorly with their first five wickets falling for just 40 runs. However, Lindfield’s UK recruit Benjamin Bhabra hit a magnificent 117 to bring some respectability to his sides total. Bhabra’s innings wasn’t enough as Lindfield was dismissed for 203 with Auburn’s Rajan Lamba taking 5 wickets.

Warringah moved into Second Position on the First Grade Ladder with a comprehensive outright victory over Pennant Hills at Weldon Oval. Pennant Hills won the toss and batted first however they were dismissed within 40 overs for a total score of just 90. Warringah’s Oliver Vinter the chief destroyer with figures of 5/25. Warringah made light work of the run chase declaring after just 20 overs with a score of 2/160. This was largely thanks to an opening stand of 153 between Craig Rupert (100 off 69 balls) and Hamish Ferguson (53 of 53 balls). Pennant Hills second innings didn’t fare much better than their first, this time being dismissed for 119. Warringah quickly went about chasing their total of 53 for an outright victory reaching the total in 9 overs to claim 10 competition points.

A much closer match was played out at Tantallon Oval between Lane Cove and Burwood Briars in First Grade. Batting first the Briars battled hard for a total of 126 off 63 overs. Captain Max Squire the highest run scorer with 32 while Lane Cove’s Joe Scarcella kept up his fine form with figures of 4/27. In reply Lane Cove got off to a shaky start before recovering to be 5/97 at one stage. Skipper Damian Naughton led the way with 53 but his dismissal caused a late collapse to then see his side 9/104. Wicketkeeper Max Dodds was joined by Liam O’Hare and the pair battled their way to find themselves just one run behind their target. Lane Cove would fall agonizingly short with Burwood’s Brenton Wright stepping up to take the final wicket of Dodds (33 off 108 balls) to claim his side victory by just one run. Wright finished with figures of 4/31 while Diren Reddy and Stephen Davis both finishing with 3 wickets each.

In other First Grade news, Strathfield captain Paul Donovan brought up his third century of the season making 107 in his sides draw against Balmain South Sydney. Donovan has already scored 374 runs at an average of 124.7 for the season. Balmain South Sydney Captain Tahmidul Islam took his second consecutive five-wicket haul in the same match with figures of 5/88 off 31.4 overs. Epping’s Anthony Boorer took 5/13 in his sides win over North West Sydney while Roseville’s Captain Dan Lenehan continued his spectacular form with a match double of 5/20 and 62no in his sides win over defending premiers Mount Pritchard-Southern Districts.

In lower grade news, North West Sydney’s Rupinder Singh made 134 in Third Grade in his sides outright victory over Epping Bulls. This was despite an unbeaten 104 from Epping captain Phillip Hood who carried his bat in the First Innings. Burwood’s Alexander Peters also scored a century in Third Grade with 102 against Lane Cove while in Second Grade, Pennant Hill’s batsmen Ruban Yathees scored 112 in a losing team against Warringah with Abhijeet Virdi leading the way for his side with an even 100. With the ball Strathfield’s Abhishek Nahar took five wickets in each innings of his sides outright victory over Balmain South Sydney in Fourth Grade, finishing with match figures of 10/26. Epping’s Brendan Ford took 7/33 in Second Grade while Georges River’s Muhammad Fayyaz (6/34) and Auburn’s Patrick Morgan (6/45) both took six wickets in Third and Second Grade respectively. Strathfields’ Alan Mathews claimed a hat-trick in Second Grade against Balmain South Sydney.
