Round Six of the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition concluded last weekend with important competition points up for grabs with the Christmas/New Year break looming. Georges River and Lane Cove played out an extremely tight match in Shires First Grade at Bexley Oval with the home side coming away with a 4-run victory. After winning the toss, Georges River decided to bat first and despite no batsmen going on to make big score they were able to post a strong total of 264. There were many contributions with the bat with Michael Labb (68), Ryan Croom (55) and Curtis Cheny (52) all posting half centuries. Lane Cove’s Joe Scarcella continued his good form picking up four wickets. In reply, Lane Cove began with a strong start with opener Greg Hunt making a big total of 122. He was well support by Archie Carter who made 61. However, a flurry of middle and lower order wickets saw Lane Cove eventually fall 4-runs short of their target. Georges River’s Ben Vella the main destroyer with the ball finishing with figures of 5/76.

 

Defending Premiers Mt Pritchard-Southern Districts moved to within two points of the top six on the First-Grade competition ladder with an outright victory over Macquarie University at Greenway 1. Batting First the Students were blown away dismissed for just 58 with reigning First Grade Player of the Year Adam Coyte taking 6/20 with Patrick Lawrence also taking 4 wickets. In reply, Mounties made light work of the chase as the pushed for maximum competition points. Coyte again continued his good match, top scoring with 46 as Mounties declared at 8/121. In the second innings Macquarie Uni improved on their first innings score however again it wasn’t enough as they were dismissed for 126 with Manish Malhotra proving the only resistance with 51. Daniel Scheinflug was the pick of the bowlers with 4/39 while Coyte again was amongst the wickets with 3/46 to make it nine wickets for the match. Mounties wrapped up the ten points chasing the 64 runs required for the loss of three wickets.

 

Burwood remained in second position in Shires First Grade with a first innings victory over North West Sydney at Kanebridge Oval. Burwood were sent in after losing the toss and scored quickly throughout their innings declaring at 6/308 of just 55 overs. Runs were shared amongst the Briars batting line up with Andrew Jalalaty top scoring with 64 while Brenton Wright (61) and Tom Parton (58) also passing fifty. In reply, NWS started strongly with an opening stand of 74. However regular wickets fell thereafter with the Hurricanes being dismissed for 211. NWS opener John Starkey the star with bat with a near run a ball century (102 off 105). Burwood’s Wright capped off a good all-round game taking 5/41 with the ball.

 

In other First Grade results, Roseville’s Will Sweeney made 139 in his sides high scoring draw with Warringah. Balmain South Sydney’s Captain Tahmidul Islam took match figures of 10/55 in his sides outright victory over Lindfield with Freddie Seccombe also taking 6/10 in the first innings. Strathfield’s Mohammed Muqtadeer took figures of 5/66 and 6/39 as his side brought home ten points over Pennant Hills.

 

In lower grade news, Warringah’s Luke Morley took the incredible match figures of 10/28 across two innings in his sides outright win over Roseville in Fourth Grade with Michael Singh also contributed significantly with 118*. Also, in Fourth Grade, Burwood’s Paul Pannuti returned amazing First innings figures of 8/19 in his sides outright victory over North West Sydney. Burwood’s Harrison Lee also scored 106 in the same match while Strathfields Abhishek Nahar took second innings figures of 7/22 to bowl his team to ten points over Pennant Hills. Georges River’s Cooper Kostopoulos (121*) and Marcus Currie-Nguyen (7/32) starred in their teams victories over Lane Cove in Fourth and Third Grade respectively while in Second Grade, Auburn’s Najeeb Azzimi took match figures of 11/72 as his team won outright over Epping despite losing on first innings. In Shires Fifth Grade, Epping’s Arjun Khurmi made 110 in his team loss to Strathfield.
