Shires Round 13 Review

The final round for the 2019/20 season was held in Round 13 of the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition with results determining finals positions. Lane Cove were able to move into 2nd position with an outright victory over Epping at Tantallon Oval. Batting first Lane Cove piled on the runs declaring at 3/351. Greg Hunt was the star of the innings with a magnificent 210 not out. Hunt carried his bat through the innings hitting 18 fours and 5 sixes. Hunt’s 210 not out is the equal 7th highest recorded First Grade Shires Individual Score and the highest by a Lane Cove First Grade batsman. Hunt was well supported by Damian Naughton who made 68 not out. In reply Epping were dismissed for 161 and 177 with Lane Cove’s Ravi Ravi taking 5/17 and 4/56 in both innings.

Auburn finished the regular season as Minor Premiers with a win over Warringah at George Parry Oval. Auburn batting first was able to post 5/270 with Corey Lowe posting his 2nd century of the season with 148. He was well supported at the top of the order by Samuel Evans who made 78. Auburn declared overnight and a great team bowling effort meant Warringah were restricted for just 140 as the home side took six competition points.

A Georges River outright victory over Pennant Hills has seen them move into 5th position and secure finals qualification at Pennant Hills Oval. After being sent in Georges River went about scoring quick runs with maximum points being required to break into the Top 6. Ben Vella led the way with an entertaining 118 not out, the innings including 5 fours and 7 sixes. Georges River were able to declare at 6/208 off 39 overs. In reply Pennant Hills collapsed from 1/56 to be dismissed for 97 in last over of Day One. Cosikan Beadle made 40 but his wicket triggered a massive collapse as Daniel Yates took 6/34. The home sides 2nd innings didn’t fare  any better as they were dismissed for 53 with Yates again taking wickets with 4/30 to complete 10-wickets for the match.

Balmain South Sydney have qualified for the finals for the first time in 10 seasons as they finished with a draw against defending Premiers Mount Pritchard-Southern Districts. Balmain South Sydney Captain Tahmid Islam took figures of 7/69 to equal the club record of 56 wickets in a First Grade season. MPSD were dismissed for 176 with Balmain South Sydney 2/82 in reply when wet weather abandoned play on Day Two.

Strathfield’s Paul Donovan has capped off a stellar season with his 6th century this season. Donovan made 109 against North West Sydney as he finished the season as the leading run scorer with 951 at an average of 118.9. This is the 7th Most Runs Scored by a Batsmen in a season in Shires First Grade Cricket and the Third Most by a Strathfield player. Strathfield made 253 with NWS 1/23 in reply when wet weather abandoned play on Day Two.
