Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the annual Sydney Shires Premiers Dinner had to be cancelled for the 2019/20 season. All major Individual and Team Award winners were announced via social media to recognize those players and teams that had exceptional performances throughout the season.
The Sydney Shires Cricket Umpires’ Association was established to recruit, educate and appoint accredited umpires to Shires competition matches; and for each match to which the SSCUA appoints umpires, team captains then assess those umpires on the basis of the standard of their performance during that match.
This season’s Shires Umpire of the Year is Stephen Blomfield. This becomes the fourth time Stephen has won this award with the last time dating back to season 2013/14. Stephen is now in his 19th season as an SSCUA member and had a strong summer on the field which saw him appointed to one of the First Grade Qualifying Finals before the season was sadly cut short. Stephen finished with a season average of 4.59 out of 5.
Stephen is one of the Association's founding members having started with the SSCUA in its inaugural 2001/02 season. In that time, he has umpired 488 matches in Shires Cricket and will next season be looking to reach the 500 game milestone.
