Sydney Shires Cricket would like to acknowledge the sad news that Burwood Briars & Shires Legend, Gerard Price passed away on Sunday the 13th of December aged 57 after a long battle of illness.

"Gerard’s dedicated contribution to his beloved sport of cricket, both on and off the field, will have him remembered as one of Briars Sports favourite sons. His untiring devotion to Briars Cricket over 40 years was immeasurable. He was revered by all cricketers and leaves a legacy and culture within cricket that will endure over time.
Gerard commenced playing as a 16-year-old in 1980 winning the comp in C Grade in that first year playing with his younger brother Paul. He was described in that year’s annual report as “the find of the season”. In 1989 Gerard took over as cricket chairman and continued in that role ever since. As a player he won many premierships, including at least one in every grade and was a competitive player in 4th grade till last season. One of his proudest moments came a few years back when he played his first game with his son Damian for Briars. It was through his determination that Gerard turned Briars Cricket into the most successful cricket club in the shire’s competition, with record breaking club championships and premierships during his time as Chairman as follows;
Club Championships - 18 including a current record-breaking run of 8 consecutive years
1st Grade-6 Premierships
2nd Grade -10 Premierships
3rd Grade -10 Premierships
4th grade -10 Premiership
Under 24s- 3 Premierships
Over the years Gerard had also achieved the following:
In a 40-year playing career, 7453 runs at 23.9 from 467 innings including 155 not outs, 1168 wickets(most ever for Briars) from 6479 overs at 13.2 and 316 catches whilst wearing the Briars cap. He also won 8 premierships as a player across the 4 grades.
Gerard also achieved the following;
-2009 Granted life membership of Briars Sports
-2012 Awarded City of Canada Bay Sport Citizen of the year
-2012 The Gerard Price Cricket Trophy for the Briars Junior Cricketer of the year was inaugurated.
-2013 Admitted to Shires Cricket Hall of Fame
-2 significant fundraising bike rides with a group of friends, firstly from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016, then the following year from Melbourne to Adelaide raising in excess of $70,000 for the Unicorn Foundation.
-2020 Order of Australia Medal in recognition for services to cricket and the community"
Gerard’s funeral service will be held on Friday the 18th December at 11am.
Gerard’s family have asked that flowers not be sent but instead donations be made to the UNICORN FOUNDATION to assist in their research into neuroendocrine cancer. The link to donate is below:
Due to COVID restrictions, the funeral will be a PRIVATE Service with only INVITED GUESTS permitted inside the Church on at Mother of Mercy Chapel, Rookwood.
Others wishing to attend are welcome but must remain outside the Church for the duration of the service.
The Briars Sports Club will be live steaming this service. The club encourage those attending Briars Sports to arrive well prior to 11am allowing for club sign in protocols and seating arrangements to occur. The Wake for Gerard will be held at Briars Sports following the funeral service.
