Warringah have been crowned the Frank Gray Shield Premiers in 2020/21 after defeating Epping Bulls by 41 runs in the Grand Final at North Epping Oval.
In what was a great day for cricket, the Epping Bulls club played host for the big match and did a fantastic job with over 300 spectators attending throughout the day, providing a great atmosphere for all players and officials.
Warringah captain Will Greenland won the toss and elected to bat and his opening batsmen didn't let him down putting on an even 100 run partnership. Abhijeet Virdi (41) and Jarod Colyer (63) looked in command and set to post an imposing first innings score of 250+ for the Men in Green before Eppings Billy McCarthy dismissed both batsmen in quick succession. From there Warringah lost wickets continually, which halted their momentum with McCarthy (2/42), Liam Bishell (2/29) and Reece Murray (3/21) all picking up valuable wickets. A first innings highlight was a great running outfield catch from Joshua Stern to dismiss Greenland which helped restrict Warringah for 8/208 off their 50 overs.
Having runs on the board gave Warringah great confidence heading into their bowling innings and they came out firing with Ned Healey taking a wicket off the first ball thanks to a great reflex catch from Virdi in the gully. The Bulls continued to lose early wickets slumping to 5/69 with Ben Wigney the chief destroyer dismissing three of the top four batsmen. A 59 run sixth wicket partnership between Oliver Williams (48) and Brendan Ford (14) clawed Epping back into the contest and had the large home crowd sensing a great comeback. However Luke Parkinson broke the partnership with the score on 128 and he quickly added two further wickets to break the back of the Bulls lineup as they were left reeling at 8/134 still 75 runs short of their target.. Parkinson finished his 10 overs with figures of (3/22) with Wigney fittingly taking the final wicket to finish with 4/29 as Epping where finally dismissed for 167.
Umpires Simon Dodwell and Stephen Blomfield named Warringah's Ben Wigney the David Gilbert Player of the Match for his match winning bowling spell of 4/29. With their victory, Warringah claimed their 9th Frank Gray Shield title and their first since the 2017/18 season.
