Vale – Mal Grant (Roseville CC)
Date of Event : Fri May 26, 2017 2:27PM

Roseville CC Life-Member and Legends of Shires Inductee, Mal Grant, has passed away after his long and brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Mal was a giant of our Roseville CC. He was the club’s greatest run-scorer and worthy recipient into the Shires Hall of Fame. The club’s batting award is named Mal.

Mal’s career statistics illustrate what an outstanding all-round cricketer he was:

  • 10,061 runs (a club record);
  • 9 centuries (a club record);
  • 240 wickets;
  • 199 catches & 7 stumpings.

"I fondly recall his prodigal son return to the club in Round 1 of the 1990/1991 season, aged about 50, and after many seasons with North Turramurra CC. He played “B” Shires against Lane Cove, at Roseville Park. We batted first, he scored 141*, and Jimmy Rickward scored 158. From the last ball of Day 1, with Mal at the non-striker’s end, Dick Cotton (a very modest No 11 batsman) hit a four to take the team’s score to 9/501. Naturally, we’ve always remembered this match as the “darts match.” It’s still the highest team score, in the entire history of the Shires Second Grade competition. Unsurprisingly, we declared overnight”.

Ian Field, Roseville CC Life Member.
