A couple of outstanding individual performances highlighted the Round 5 match between Warringah and Auburn in the McDonald’s Sydney Shires Competition. Warringah’s Khalid Sawas brought up his 2nd century of the season in Warringah’s first innings victory over Auburn. Sawas scored 130 as Warringah scored 6/309 (dec) at Weldon Oval. Sawas is now averaging an outstanding 134.7 for the season. Auburn were dismissed for just 96 in 28.4 overs. Gareth Newman was the star with the ball taking the amazing figures of 8/39 off 14.4 overs. Auburn fared much better in their 2nd innings thanks to their skipper Ardil Domingo who made 110not out as his helped his side bat out 46 overs avoid an outright defeat.
Macquarie Universities opening batsmen Sadmim Rahman has helped his side to an impressive win over Roseville. After being sent in on the Northern Oval deck, Roseville were able to post an impressive first innings total of 8/287 (dec). Ben Maher (68) and Will Sweeney (61no) were the best with the bat. In reply Mac Uni’s Rahman lead from the top of the order with a well-made 128 which included 15 fours and a six, his innings only coming to a close when he retired hurt. Rahman was well supported by Ben Aitchison who was undefeated on 88. Their 117 run partnership providing the backbone of Macquarie Uni’s run chase as they reached their target with the loss of only 4 wickets.
Lindfield also brought up 6 points with a good win against Burwood at Rothwell Park. Batting first Burwood reached 183 thanks largely to Karl Vendrasco who made 61 while Lindfield’s James White took 4/44. In reply Lindfield’s Thomas Cullen continued his impressive form this season scoring 100no as he helped his side reach their target with 5 wickets in hand. Cullen’s past three scores this season have now been 166, 82, 100no.
Mount Pritchard-Southern Districts remain at the top of the First Grade Competition ladder with an outright victory over Balmain South Sydney at Alan Davidson Oval. Mounties Captain Daniel Scheinflug took 9 wickets in the match with hauls of 5/20 and 4/30 as Balmain South Sydney were dismissed for 87 and 100 in their two innings. Mounties made light work of chasing their 2nd innings total of 100 for an outright victory scoring the runs in just 11.4 overs with Damien Duroux making 51no.
Georges River also brought up an outright victory against Pennant Hills which saw them move into 2nd position on the ladder. Georges River’s Ben Vella took 5/30 in Pennant Hill’s 1st innings as they were dismissed for 98. Vella then continued his dominance on the match with a quickfire 72 off 49 (3 fours and 6 sixes) as the Blues declared at 6/164. Pennant Hills 2nd innings was much the same as their first as they were dismissed for 91 with Daniel Yates picking up 4 wickets. Georges River then scored the required 26 runs for outright victory without losing a wicket.
In other news Lane Cove’s Freddie Boys scored 102 in his side’s draw against Epping. Boys then continued his good form scoring 100 the very next day in his teams Frank Gray Shield clash also against Epping. The Bulls just managed to hold on for the draw with Lane Cove just requiring one more wicket for victory. Meanwhile Strathfield recorded their first win of the season with a 20 run victory against North West Sydney with Harry Thomas taking 6/47 in his sides victory.
