The Frank Gray Shield (Under 24’s) Competition kicked off on Sunday the 17th of November with Round One action being played across the Thunder and Sixers Conferences.
The Thunder Conference match between Burwood Briars and Auburn at Rothwell Park saw a thrilling finish with Auburn defeating last years runners up Burwood by one wicket on the final ball of the match. Burwood won the toss and decided to bat and were in immediate trouble slumping to 4/10 and then 6/47. The Briars were able to recover to post a competitive total of 189 with Phil Maxwell (39) and Jeremy Wedd (35) the best with the bat. Auburn’s Amarjot Singh (3/17) and Aaron Hadley (3/33) were the pick of the bowlers.
In reply, Auburn begun shakily themselves losing 2/9 early before they were able to recover to 4/136 thanks to opener Harrison Quinn’s 49. Singh’s good day continued as he made 41 in the middle order, but wickets fell at regular intervals with Auburn falling to 8/183 with one over remaining. A wicket in the final over gave Burwood hope however Auburn would reach their target nine wickets down on the last ball. Burwood’s Damian Price was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-33.
Another one-wicket thriller was played out in the Sixers Conference between Pennant Hills and Roseville at Pennant Hills Oval. Pennant Hills batting first found scoring runs difficult but toughed it out to find themselves 2/63 midway through their innings. Pennant Hills opener Ravindu Basnayake led the way making 48 before he was run out. A flurry of wickets late in the innings saw the Pumas dismissed for 136 off 47 overs with Roseville Captain Henry Evan the chief destroyer with 3/20.
Roseville got off to a solid start in reply reaching 1/63 before a collapse saw them slump to 8/83. Pennant Hill’s Agnik Podder the man responsible as he finished with figures of 6/35 off his 10 overs. A ninth wicket partnership of 49, led by Archie Wright who made a quick fire 41 off 36 balls, saw Roseville get within 5 runs of victory before Wright was dismissed. A few nervous moments followed before Roseville were able to reach their target to win by one wicket.
In other matches, Georges River batsmen Jarrod Mazurkiewicz made 94 as the defending premiers got their campaign off to a solid start with a 7-wicket victory over North West Sydney. Meanwhile Lindfield’s Benjamin Bhabra took 5/31 in his side’s bonus point victory over Macquaire University.
